The WSAW HDTV Antenna Installation

WSAW-TV installed its high definition television antenna atop its existing NTSC VHF antenna on the westrnmost arm of the camdelabra. This installation was accomplished with the help of helicopter and three man tower crew.

The new antenna is approximately 30 feet long and weighs about 3000 pounds. The top of the antenna is to the right. The radiating elements are completely enclosed withing the orange housing. The protrusions through this housing are climbing pegs.

The helicopter used was a former military CH-4 helicopter modified for construction applications.

The structure on at the bottom of the antenna, nicknamed "the cage", provides about 4 feet of vertical separation between the existing VHF and new UHF HDTV radiating elements. It is through this cage that the feedline passes.

The lift was staged from the parking lot of the Granite Peak ski chalet at the foot of the north face of the mountain.The drum like devices visible at the top of the picture are snow making machines.

The lift was scheduled to begin at 6:00AM CDT. However reduced visibility at the intallation level due to a low cloud ceiling, obvious in this image, forced a delay until noon.
