Help!
September 2, 2002- a quiet Labor Day Monday is interrupted by severe weather. An F1 tornado rips through the north end of Wausau, destroying trees and homes. Its ironic that this tornado happened almost 25 years to the day of the historic 1977 F3 tornado that inflicted much more damage to the city.
In 1977 a group of individuals started holding severe weather nets on the 146.82 Rib Mountain Repeater. Twenty five years later, weather spotting has become a indispensible part of the 146.82 repeater. The spotters are trained and certified by the National Weather Service and provide an important early warning system to the communities in central Wisconsin. Without them, the devastation on September 2nd could have been much worse.
The 146.82 repeater is not just for weather spotting, its wide area coverage makes it a boon for travelers passing through the area and locals wanting to keep in touch within its multi county range.
But the repeater needs your help. The construction of the new tower and transmitter building on Rib Mountain has put a strain on the organization. The tower owners see the space occupied by public service minded Amateur Radio operators as valuable real estate and would like to see them out. Now, more than ever, your voice is important. Joining the Rib Mountain Repeater Association shows that amateur radio is important to the community. It creates solidarity within the amateur radio community.
Joining the RMRA ensures that valuable community services, such as weather spotting will continue. Joining is easy; dues are $20.00 per year. Just fill out the enclosed form and mail it in. You will receive a handy membership card, association roster, and repeater autopatch privileges. Also, any contribution over the $20.00 membership fee is tax deductible.
Please join us in supporting amateur radio in North Central Wisconsin.
Sincerely and 73,
