RMRA Silent Key

Wilfred Bergs of Wausau enjoyed radio and electronics all of his life. He made very few transmissions, but instead enjoyed listening across the HF and VHF bands.

He was born Dec. 25, 1917, in Edgar, son of the late Joseph and Elizabeth (Metz) Bergs. On Oct. 9, 1948, he married Mary Ann Kulas at Holy Family Catholic Church, Poniatowski.

Wilfred was the owner/operator of the former Cherry Grove Cheese Factory in Poniatowski for more than seven years. Prior to his retirement, Wilfred worked at Wausau Papers in Brokaw. He was also proud to be an active member of the Wausau Auxiliary Police for more than 30 years.

Some of Wilfred's favorite pastimes included all aspects of photography as well as electronics. After his retirement, both Wilfred and Mary Ann enjoyed traveling and were fortunate enough to revisit one of his favorite places -- Hawaii. Most of all, Wilfred took great joy in aviation and always looked forward to going to the EAA fly-ins in Oshkosh.

He died Thursday, Feb. 14, 2008, at Aspirus Wausau Hospital at age 90.

He was the father of RMRA System Engineer Bill Bergs KC9UC.

A memorial has been established in Wilfred's name.
